In truth, multi-level marketinging, also known as internet promotion or simply MLM, is simply another sales model that first came out in the early 1940’s.  A company called California Vitamins spotted that all of its new sales members were friends and family of the present sales drive, the reason being that they wanted the product at wholesale cost.  The management also found that it was far easier to make a sales force of a large amount of folk who each sold a bit of the production than it was to find a few folks that could sell a large amount of products. 

Therefore they answered to what was happening by designing a sales compensation structure that encouraged their sales staff to turn satisfied clients (frequently friends and family) into sales members.  The company rewarded them for the sales made by their complete group of sales members.  And the multi-level marketing history was made! 

On 1956, Dr.  Forrest Shaklee united in the multilevel marketing idea to offer a larger dispersion of the food supplements he had created. 

Following in 1959, previous NutraLite sales representatives Rich DeVoss and Jay Van Andel initiated the Amway company as the North American Way of advertising products. 

All was fine and good till the concept got into some wrong hands that began to miss-use it.  Agree with it or not, one of the first examples of this came in the form of chain letters.  The letters promised great gain if you would send a dime or a greenback to the person at the bottom and many did just that.  Though these letters actually started and were thankfully shut down before multi level marketing was born, they later spawned similar schemes which we all know as pyramid or Ponzi schemes.  These prohibited activities require giving members compensation for recruiting other members.  Nevertheless, no product or services is offered as it is by legal multilevel marketing service. 

In 1974, Senator Walter Mondale announced pyramid and Ponzi schemes to be the nation’s number one purchaser fraud.  And that is’s when it became coarse for multilevelmarketing.  In the mid 1970’s, because they’d no real clear experience of what network marketing was all about, the federal Trade Commission started to target all internet marketing firms.  In 1975, the FTC filed a claim against Amway, on the cause that the corporation was an illegal pyramid and that its refusal to sell its productions in retail stores made a restraint of trade. 

Four years and millions of bucks later, Amway cleared its name.  In 1979 the FTC ultimately ruled that Amway was not a pyramid, that its revenue was established from the sale of its products, and the FTC recognized internet promotion as a legal distribution system. 

Later, the multilevel marketing story has come to incorporate thousands of successul MLM firms all around the globe.
