Lack of Financing has Huge Effect on Construction Businesses
Small Businesses and Contractors Largely Affected by Nation’s Struggling Economy
As this nation remains in one of the biggest recessions in the past {60 years, there are many industries that are greatly affected, but go unnoticed~A large number of industries and U.S. businesses are struggling indirectly because of this nation’s economic recession~The largest recession that U.S. residents and businesses have seen in the past six decades continues to indirectly affect many industries}. The housing market and stock market have been some of the major focuses, while the banking and financing business follows a close second. Many major U.S. owned businesses, that employ millions of Americans, are also being affected by the recent decrease in these huge industries.
At the center of the housing market and property value collapse is Phoenix, Arizona – one of the most affected locations in the nation. Home values are down by 20 to 40%, while in some extreme cases, overall home values are 1/2 of what they were just two years ago. Bank repossessions are up 150%, and there are many reports of homeowners just abandoning homes.
Just when Americans think they have not been affected by this national recession, they find out they are mistaking. When most homeowners desire to make enhancements to their properties, they may need financing or some sort of financial assistance. This home improvement loan generally comes from a local bank, credit union, or credit agency. Swimming pool, landscape, and home improvement companies have not had the fortune of getting it’s prospecting buyers approved for these loan programs.
Since up to sixty% of swimming pool owners require financial assistance or loans, Phoenix swimming pool builders have been one of the largest affected companies. Without the aid of financing, these potential customers are either unable to purchase a pool, or end up buying a much smaller, less-expensive pool. Arizona pool companies have suffered greatly with the downswing in the economy and lack of financing – sometimes even closing their companies, down-sizing, or diversifying into other venues. By offering a more diverse range of construction services, such as pool remodels, landscaping, and hardscaping, Intelligent pool contractors are generating additional income. General contractors have entirely gone into other fields, such as sales, marketing, or consulting. By offering other landscape features such as outdoor kitchens, Phoenix BBQ islands, fire pits, and travertine patios, many Phoenix Landscaping Contractors are producing additional money.
Unique Landscapes and Custom Pools, a pool and landscape Phoenix builder, figured out how to diversify it’s products and services many years ago. Unique is able to offer its customers many different options and services in the home improvement industry because of it’s diversity as a Phoenix pool company, general contractor, and landscaping contractor. “We’ve been able to make things happen during these tough times, luckily we diversified a few years prior, and have many different aspects of swimming pools and landscape services to offer our customers. The challenges have come about with the inability for these potential buyers to gain these home-improvement loans or financial assistance.”
“It’s difficult to think about all the money that was given to banks just a year ago for these loans, and now it’s challenging for our clients, who want to buy our products, to get this assistance” remarks owner Chris Griffin, of Unique Landscapes and Custom Pools in Mesa, AZ. Maybe it’s time for the government to look a little further into some of the struggles of the smaller companies that are greatly affected by this struggling economy. “Phoenix pool loans are getting better” remarks Griffin, “I can’t quite see the end of the tunnel, but I can faintly see the light”.

Southwest Xeriscaping and Desert Landscape Ideas
The final beautifying touch to each new home, home remodel, or outdoor project is Landscaping. It’s what makes the building, the exterior, and the overall project beautiful. Landscaping also should be designed and installed to accent the architectural feel of the building or home. Most landscape solutions come from the homeowner side of landscape design or landscape architects – who specialize in all aspects of exterior design, landscaping, and outdoor ideas. The best xeriscaping landscape designers are very conscientious of upfront installation costs, monthly maintenance, and long-term upkeep.
My experience stems from many years in Phoenix, where upfront costs were negligible, and the yearly operating costs (i.e. water bills, landscape maintenance, etc.) were none. this came the importance of low maintenance, low water consumption, and xeriscaped landscapes for dry climates. With water being scarce, xeriscaping in the southwestern climates is very popular and a landscapers solution. Many new developments are restricting the installation of sod & turf areas, and many local municipalities are offering cash rebates for the conversion of grass to xeriscaping. Xeriscaping has been a very popular method of landscaping, and landscape designers have adapted this style for many of their clients.
As a Arizona landscape contractor, it’s the landscape designer’s job to design all aspects of desert & xeriscape ideas. From Sonoran Xeriscapes, which include assortments of AZ cactus, ocotillos, and agaves to Southwestern landscapes and Phoenix Landscaping that usually include many desert environments that can’t quite tolerate the hot summers of Phoenix. Desert landscaping & Xeriscaping often include many of these following types of plant species:
- Traditional Color Plants- These desert landscaping plants are standard, normal xeriscaping plants that require nominal water usage. Some of these plants are high flowering varieties, hummingbird-attractant with long bloom seasons. Some common species that landscapers love are the cherry and russian sages, Echinacea, gaillardia, gayfeather, coneflowers, asters, columbines, or coreopsis.
- Arizona Desert Plants- Many of the species above would not sustain an Sonoran summer, which is the reason for a secondary list of Arizona desert plants. Red Bird of Paradise, Arizona Yellow Bells, Orange Jubilee, Texas Sage, Baja Fairy Duster are all popular favorites among the Phoenix landscape contractors. Bougainvillea, cassia, hopseed, angelita daisy, mexican honeysuckle and chuparosa are all varieties that you may find in other hot, dry desert climates.
- Xeriscape Grasses- Desert Landscaping designers use grasses for accents or to fill in big areas. Desert grasses can include large specimens such as pampas grass, purple fountain grass or large deer grass which can grow to over 6′ tall. Deer grass is a great choice for grass accents too. To bridge large landscape areas, some southwestern climates can handle blue fescue, grama grass, or many other ornamental grasses.
- Agaves- There are many unique species of agaves, that range from the tiny agave parryi to the robust 62″ tall agave americana. The southwest xeriscape plant of choice is ofter an Agave because of it’s minimal water use and little to no maintenance.
- Cacti- Arizona desert landscaping designers have the great selection of many varieties of cacti – but most commonly, the Saguaro cactus (native to Arizona). Saguaros make the perfect statement for any desert sustainable landscape because of it’s ability to look great with NO water usage. Cacti in landscaping will drastically reduce the need for irrigation, and some unique cacti considerations are: Fish Hook, Totem Pole, Mexican Fence Post and Pin Cushion.
- Desert Trees- Desert Adapted trees also require less water and less maintenance. Trees can provide some natural shade for those shade loving plants, and also a natural wind break if used properly. Some common desert landscape trees are the sumac, mesquite, chitalpa, elm and acacia tree.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN YOUR LANDSCAPING PROJECT:
- Review the city requirements for xeriscaping species, plant locations and restricted species. Because of their high water consumption and demand, some locations don’t allow the installation of turf or grass.
- Do your homework on landscaping & xeriscaping plants that are best for your specific area. Not all species grow in all regions – make sure you figure out which region you are in before starting.
- Research annual rainfall for your location and this can help you determine species and setup & plan for a good drip irrigation system.
- Use clumpings of different color plants in mounding. Use larger specimens of plants and trees, while under-planting the small growing ground-covers below for splashes of color.
- The best results from watering plants occurs watering for longer periods of time in the morning (to avoid evaporation).
- Practice good watering habits – usually watering every day is not necessary, you should train your landscape plants to use the water they get, and deep water less frequently.
- Cut dead flowers & foliage to increase blooms & blooming times.
- Effective xeriscapes have less or no turf grass (which requires lots of water).
- The contracting of a landscape and pool designer is a excellent investment when considering the best of SW landscaping & Xeriscaping.
Learning Gardening Services was a #1 move
Recently I’ve become a provider of gardening services. And though I’ve been doing it for a few months now, I was told very recently that I still can’t refer to myself as a gardener. Apparently there’s a clear distinction between gardening services and landscaping services — gardeners not only maintaining outdoor areas, but being experts in plant know-how as well, able to discern what plants will do well in different environments and so forth. Landscapers, I was told, merely maintain existing areas. All that aside, learning how to offer landscaping and gardening services was one of the best things I’ve done this year.
If a person does it long enough, gardening will teach them just about everything they need to know to keep up with the repairs of a home. Repairing broken sprinklers, building apparatuses for ponds and waterfalls, and setting up retaining walls, one gets to try their hand at plumbing, carpentry, and masonry. Though I’m still far from being an expert about plants and their optimal habitats, I’ve learned many of the skills necessary for keeping up with a deteriorating home. Those skills I’ll hone as much as I can in future months and years.
Another good reason why learning an assortment of gardening services was so fulfilling was because it gave me a connectedness to that good old master/apprentice style of working. Doing work for a friend of mine who owns his own gardening business, I was taught gardening firsthand by a man who’d been in the business for over thirty years. Being younger, I have very much enjoyed spending time with a person who is a master at his craft. There’s just something special and rare about that style of learning in our modern day and age. You don’t come across that sort of thing much these days. It’s something I think we’ve lost in this country. Perhaps I’m just being nostalgic. I don’t know.
On the more current, economic side, the demand for gardening services has seen a sharp decline, especially in the state of California, where I reside. During tough economic times, gardeners are seen more as a luxury than a necessity. Add to that the current water crisis in southern California, and you’ve got a very tricky situation for landscapers and gardeners. But lawns still grow as fast as ever, and hopefully people will soon begin to miss their gardening professionals. I’ve seen quite a deterioration this year in the upkeep of outdoor landscapes. It seems simple enough to take care of a yard, but oddly, even maintaining a green lawn can be an arduous task. It’s a shame, not only that gardening services are on the decline, but also that yards are losing their landscape lustre. As things begin to bounce back, I’m hopeful we’ll see a change.
The Right Plants for Your Landscape
Exploring nature is a rejuvenating experience. However, exploring the forest may not fit into the daily schedule. Why don’t you bring nature directly into your courtyard?
Landscaping Options
Landscaping brings nature closer to home. It includes many elements: the area, design, weather and others. The whole outlook depends mostly on the owner’s taste. Some want the effect of water (pools, waterfalls, etc.) and some like stones, rocks, etc.
To create a very natural feel, you must use plants. They are most helpful in creating the total effect of the landscape. It should not be just any plant; it should be the most appropriate plant for the area and climate.
Best Choice of Plants for the Landscape
1. Groundcovers These plants are indispensable to a landscape as they can serve as backdrops for trees, shrubs, etc. There are many types of groundcovers to choose from.
Sun-Loving Sunny areas are considered problematic. A lot of plants don’t like direct sunlight. Juniper groundcovers and hardy perennials are very helpful in resolving this problem.
Shade The plants can’t stand being hit by sunlight directly. They should be used in areas that are not exposed to the sun except for short periods of time. Most of the shade-loving plants are low-growing or mid-sized.
A lot of flowering plants attract butterflies, bees, birds, etc. It is important to choose plants that grow pollens. Plants like bee balm, holly hock and red columbine attract hummingbirds.
Aroma The garden can be made aromatic by using foliage plants. The lavender perennial plant’s flowers provide therapeutic scent. Its serves as a beautiful border at the same time.
2. Wet Plants Some landscapes come with wet areas like artificial ponds or waterfalls. plants the thrive in wet soils are used to natural and beaty given effects in order to avoid leaving it bare.
3. More than coming up with a good landscape, for repellent plants its also necessary to maintain it and keep it free from beign intruded. A few plants are able to repel pests like the deer. Some ornamental grasses and flowers are used for deer control.
4. Grasses These are helpful in the garden also. There are different types of grasses, the functional type and the ornamental ones.
Functional grasses are those that are used in the background. Lawn grass is an example. It serves as an outdoor carpet.
Ornamental grasses appeal more to aesthetics. These are used for decorating and for landscaping like flowers. These could stand alone or could be mixed with trees and shrubs.
Plants are beautiful, but the appropriate ones in a certain design must be selected and properly situated. They must be able to serve their purpose by thriving. This is the only thing to bring nature closer to home.

Using Fruit Trees In Small Places
Almost monthly we find that we are being presented with a new diet or exercise plan created specially to entice us to alter the way in which we live.
It is true that we all should really closely examine our current behaviour with a view to eating a great deal more vegetables and fresh fruit and exercising more often. One thing we may want to do is to consider growing a few fruit trees in our backyard. However, as most yards are only rather small places, it is probable that you may be a little restricted in what is possible.
The majority of us fully comprehend that organic vegetables and fruit are much better for us than the alternatives unfortunately the added cost is sometimes too prohibitive. We also know that the fresher the fruit or vegetable is the more vitamins and minerals it will contain. By cultivating our own fruit trees we are able to grow organic fruit at an extremely low cost furthermore, because it can be harvested immediately before use, such fruit is also the freshest possible.
Most of us live in a city environment where it is common to have yards which give over only an incredibly small area in which to cultivate a garden. Such yards are immensely unsuitable for large mature trees which can, eventually be the cause of a collection of problems. The roots can encroach upon foundations, branches can grow up against walls and windows and they also restrict the sunlight. The most obvious problem is that such a huge item in a small backyard will obviously look out of place.
Even in the smallest of backyards something incredibly wonderfull can be created. Professional gardeners can create the most amazing plans but, with a fair bit of effort and time, it is possible to do this yourself. To do it correctly you will need to read up a little to understand which are the best shrubs, plants and trees to cultivate and the correct way to use them.
If you have a really small garden the inclusionaddition of a fruit tree will add beauty and interest. In the spring the tree will be smothered in great looking, and sweet smelling, blossom. By the time of fall the tree will be covered in ripe fruit ready for the picking. Even during the winter a fruit tree can still appear very interesting and such a tree can be a focal point.
It is now possible to purchase dwarf varieties of fruit tree, these are generated by grafting the main stem of a fruit tree to highly suitable dwarf root stock. Modern dwarf root stock, such as M9, is more reliable than older types of dwarf root stock. M9 root stock can cause a fruit tree to grow rather small but still able to produce much more fruit.
Modern compact fruit trees can be cultivated in small yards as the dwarf variety produces a large amount of fruit from the smallest of bushes. A dwarf fruit tree will not often be larger than 1.8m high but the amount of growth can be decreased a little further by cultivating it in a container. By following a carefully planned pruning regime you can restrict the growth while retaining a aesthetically pleasing architecture.
Amongst the most useful of fruit trees for the gardener with only a little yard, is the spur apple tree. While the tree can still grow to about 1.8m in height it has such an upright habit that it often appears rather strange covered in an incredible number of of ripened apples.
As well as apple trees there are dwarf varieties of fruit tree for example plums, cherries, pears, nectarines, figs and more.
Using Perennials, Such As The Useful Yarrow, in Gardening
A surprising number of folk now totally appreciate that a beautifully well maintained garden can add an incredibly large amount of extra cash worth to their house. It is also true to say that, a wisely designed backyard can greatly add to the amount of useable space for your family and you. For these reasons, and a few more besides, gardening has, over the years, increased to become an incredibly popular pastime. Top of the agenda for most landscapers is a gorgeous annual display of colorful and varied blooms.
While many landscape gardeners choose to create color by using annual flowers, the remainder decide that using perennial garden fowers is the better solution. Annuals are those plants which {grow, flower and die|germinate, develop, bloom and die} in only the single year whereas perennial garden plants will continue to flower year upon year. Obviously there are plus points and disadvantages for both annual flowers and perennial garden fowers and landscape gardening is all about deciding which is the most suitable blend of the two.
A large number of folk experience heart warming remembrances of long gone days spent in a grandmother’s garden enjoying the wonderous aromas of many old fashioned favorite perennial garden plants. Unfortunately it can be rather difficult for even the most avid gardener (including some seasoned professionals) to replicate old fashioned gardens because a large number of the varieties (of species) can no longer be purchased. Happily many of the older cultivars have been replaced by strains which are much more able to withstand disease, therefore you can often discover suitable replacement plants which show hardly any (other) difference to the older plant.
Old Fashioned Perennial Plants
One of the most popular perennial plants used in garden landscaping today is the Achillea ptarmica which was first used in American gardens during colonial times when it was brought over from Europe. Achillea is a very old fashioned plant used since the days of the Greek hero Achilles (from whom the plant gains it’s name) who used it to treat his soldiers. Achillea is able to halt bleeding and works amazingly well at healing wounds.
Yarrow
Achillea ptarmica has beautiful flat clusters of small flowers that look rather daisy like. Achillea are available with flower heads in a selection of colors ranging from various shades of pinks, yellows and whites. Achillea are considered by most gardeners to be considerably easy perennials to cultivate. They are so simple to propagate because they are rather invasive plants which can be seen growing on the poorest of soil. If you wish to witness success with Yarrow the only thing is to avoid growing in boggy or poorly drained soil. The plants are well able tolerating drought conditions. Achillea ptarmica and Achillea millefolium are two of the most often chosen varieties but there are many other types available.

The Joy In Making The Japanese Landscape Design
Bamboo landscaping is really quite attractive. For one thing, bamboo has long been a popular product used in gardening and landscaping but today with so many people focusing on ecology, bamboo landscaping has blossomed. The explanation is that bamboo is more like a grass than a tree. When bamboo is cut, it grows back fast..
While bamboo can be used with any garden, it is mostly incorporated in the making of a Japanese landscape design. For this style of garden, there are very particular elements and materials used. In addition, there are a variety of styles that can be built. With the dry garden, sand is used, raked carefully into patterns that reflect the rippling of waves. In the center of the “pond”, a rock is placed, which represents an island.
Moreover, the most amazing styles for makinga making a Japanese garden landscape are plant life and water. This type of garden would generally have a small water feature, which would include a waterfall, pond, or stream. As a part of the body of water you would think about adding a small bridge, a deer chaser, lantern, and various types of plants such as floating lilies.
Then, Japanese garden fences are also a common dynamic, which are made from bamboo. These fences are used to establish a feeling of seclusion. The whole concept of the Japanese garden is balance of beauty and tranquility. This is the one place where after a hectic day, you should be able to sit or walk, finding rest for the body, mind and spirit..
In Japan and even some of the larger Japanese gardens in this country, a teahouse will be erected. Now, in creating Japanese landscaping, the teahouse does not have to be big and complicated, merely a small area where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the garden. In fact, many home improvement companies and gardening stores actually sell kits if you want to do it yourself.
Consequently while there are many types of gardens, it is hard to beat the charm found with a well planned Japanese garden. Incorporating bamboo construction and landscaping, Japanese garden bridge, lots of trees, shrubs, and flowers, as well as the other elements mentioned, the look would be complete. With the garden being completed, you are certainly to be the envy of every other person in your neighborhood and for good reason.
Again, to gain a better understanding as to the making of a Japanese garden, you will find several fine resources that can be used for guidance..
Also, the internet is an abundance of information. While surfing, you can look at the many different, taking the different elements you like best and designing a garden based on personal preference, yard size, yard configuration, and budget..
